Course synopsis

New students are welcomed to all jewellery making classes with Hannah in Wilmslow, Cheshire.  From complete beginners to proficient metalsmiths, using materials to suit all budgets.  Silver, brass, copper, gold, aluminium and pewter are favourites.  Recycling and melting old jewellery is mesmerising.

Starting a new hobby is always a little daunting, walking into a room full of strangers, stepping out of your comfort zone, however you will soon feel right at home, meeting like-minded people with lots of coffee and cake from our wonderful community cafe.

Classes are tailored individually, allowing progression at your own pace giving confidence to work independently. If your crafty and familiar with tools you might progress faster, however we have many tools, machines and vision aids to make life easier for less nimble finger.

Creativity and skills develop over time, students’ ideas grow from demonstrations, observing, practicing and being inspired by classmates who have been making for a while.  Project sheets and the many books written by Hannah will help you on your creative path.

Cultivating basic skills such as saw piercing, hammering, shaping, filing, texturing will soon expand to more specialised, intricate methods which often just need breaking down into simple stages.  Techniques are endless in our very well-equipped workshop you just need to ask and most likely its possible.  Examples include fold forming, stone setting of many types, wax carving, casting, inlay, granulation, chain making, wire wrapping, beading, enamelling, the list is infinite.

Tools & Materials:  The workshop is very well equipped with machines and hand tools for you to use.  Materials and consumables are available to purchase in class or you can bring your own.  There's a huge array of gemstones to peruse.

What to wear & bring:  Closed toes shoes, hair tied back, apron, notebook, fine sharpie, pen.

Hannah’s encouragement: ‘It’s fantastic for our new students to work in the studio alongside students who have been coming to class, in some cases for years and the studio is a great place to gain knowledge and inspiration, share designs and creativity.’

Where might attending lead:  Although there is no pressure to progress and most attend for pleasure Hannah is proud to see achievements of younger students over the last 4 decades.  Students are hobbyists, gone to university to pursue all levels up to masters, changed careers, selling at markets and prestigious art events, opened jewellery shops and jewellery schools, Duke of Edinburgh skills section, portfolios for university applications, apprenticeship, etc

Testimonial from Hannah’s students: “Hannah’s passion and creativity have been such an inspiration and literally changed the course of my life!”  “Hannah is a tutor who shares her wealth of experience and knowledge of fine jewellery, making the classes informative and enjoyable.”  “It’s a very mindful experience to immerse myself in a creative environment working with my hands, time passes far too quickly.”

Dates: Classes run for 10 weeks with a week off for half term.  It is possible to switch an occasional class time or day as and when family things crop up. Talk to Hannah about that.
