Course synopsis
Hannah welcomes everyone to join her classes, from complete beginners to proficient metalsmiths. This varied and friendly class gives new students the opportunity to meet like-minded people in an environment where they can try out new skills. In the studio, they can meet other students who are working on a variety of projects. Work often stops in the studio while techniques are observed and then practiced such as soldering or melting and there is no better experience for newcomers than watching a piece of work develop in the hands of the more experienced students, all under Hannah’s watchful eye.
Hannah’s classes are inclusive, all abilities are welcome, and she enthusiastically encourages people who are new to jewellery making to try new techniques, ‘It’s fantastic for our new students to work in the studio alongside students who have been coming to class, in some cases for years and the studio is a great place to gain knowledge and inspiration, share designs and creativity.’
Hannah says, ‘You do not have to be crafty or artistic to attend this class and you can choose projects that increase your skills and confidence as you design and create pieces of jewellery to wear or to gift. It is also a very mindful experience to immerse yourself in a creative environment working with your hands for a period of time.’
In class with Hannah, you will be introduced to design and metalwork skills using a variety of jewellery making tools and techniques. Classes are tailored to individual ability and there are tools for those with less nimble fingers. Hannah says that the studio is a place where you can progress at your own pace, starting with basic hand tools and systematically move towards more unusual and unique creations with advanced tools, techniques and materials.
Hannah is a tutor who shares her wealth of experience and knowledge of fine jewellery, making the classes informative and enjoyable. (Testimonial from one of her students).
Classes may include,
◊ stone setting ◊ saw piecing ◊ texturing ◊ casting ◊ fold forming ◊ enamelling chain-making ◊ forging ◊ stamping ◊ inlay ◊ mokume ◊ granulation ◊ melting
All tools are supplied, raw materials, metals, semi-precious stones and consumables can be purchased in class or bought from suppliers locally or via the internet. For example, it might cost as little as £3 for the metals to make a slim ring and the metals can be purchased on the day from Hannah, larger amounts of metals can be purchased online under Hannah’s guidance.
Hannah’s classes run for 10 weeks with a week off for half term. It is possible to switch an occasional class time or day as and when family things crop up. Talk to Hannah about that.
If your ‘teen’ or younger family member would like to join a class please send Hannah a message as it may be possible to accommodate various scenarios such as Duke of Edinburgh skills, GCSE/A-level work/degree work or other projects.
