Course synopsis

In this course, we discover different drawing and painting techniques by relating at and practically responding to the work already done by other artists.

Sabine will bring choices for painting techniques (working with acrylics/oils or watercolours) and drawing techniques to the learner group that fall into particular topics like ‘landscape & buildings’, ‘animal silhouettes & colour background textures’, ‘abstracts & flowers’, etc and the learners will be given a choice for what we will be working on in the next block of sessions.

Then, for each week, Sabine sends an email with reference material that shows artwork by other artists in relation to our current theme (which we will also look at during our class) but also a handout that the learners can use in our class to get their artwork started. Sometimes, such a handout might be a layout sketch as guidance for working or a template for re-drawing in case we deal with a visually complex feature.

Sabine gives plenty of demonstrations in class and we all post photographs of our ongoing progress into the course-specific whats-app group so we can all see who does what work (you can also choose not to post images, if you wish).

Usually each session leaves the learner with a new technique and a new piece of work. Sometimes, we don’t quite manage to finish every picture in our two-hour session and learners finish it away form the session, and, during the week continue to engage with each in the whats app chat about their progress.

No matter if we use watercolour,  oils or acrylic paints, pencils or fine liners, each themed block allows learners to explore different aspects of using different mediums and, in the case of painting, how to  layer colour to create the illusion of three-dimensionality.

Learners will need to have an internet connection with Google Chrome (our online meeting format, Google Classroom is based on Google Chrome) , a mobile phone to access Whatsapp and take photographs.

The day before the session, Sabine sends out an email with materials for information,  inspiration and as working guidance when we are together in the meeting.  Learners need to print out some of these materials and have them handy in class.

Learners are also welcome to bring along their own sourced reference materials, if they wish, and use that for inspiration.

This online art course on Tuesday mornings (9:30 till 11:30) takes place in Google Classroom.
