Information
This discussion will introduce the Middle East through an engaging, question-driven framework that challenges stereotypes and addresses the assumptions commonly hold but rarely articulated. It presents the region as diverse, historically and politically complex, shaped by strategic geography, imperial legacies, contested borders, and sustained external intervention rather than by religion alone.
By examining the roles of state formation, identity, power, and proxy conflict, we will reframe Middle Eastern instability as a modern political problem rooted in history and global interests. You will be encouraged to replace media-driven narratives with contextual understanding and to see the Middle East not as inherently chaotic, but as a fascinating and complex region grappling with the pressures of modernity under exceptional strategic and geopolitical strain.
Dr Barkei's more detailed course, The Arab Israel conflict explained, begins on Thursday 16th April. You can find the details by clicking HERE
