The Melody Lingers On

All CategoriesClassics, Literature, Philosophy, Poetry & Politics

Course synopsis

This time we will be considering songwriters of the Great American Songbook who may be less famous or celebrated than the “biggies, e.g. Berlin, Porter, the Gershwins, Kern and Rodgers.  Despite the huge output of these musical giants there is a long list of others, very gifted and in some cases equally prolific. Some of the names you will know but some you may not although I guarantee you will know some of the material. Hoagy Carmichael you may well recognise but what about Harry Warren, Burton Lane or Rube Bloom?  We will also review some of the work of British songwriters from this tradition.  To demonstrate how the melodies linger on we will hear some of the material of two recently departed Titans of the genre; Stephen Sondheim and Burt Bacharach. As always we welcome friends old and new.

Course starts on 21 September 2023
