The Human Figure In 20th Century Art

All CategoriesArchaeology, History & History of Art

Course synopsis

This 12 session course will look at the story of the human figure in the art of the 20th century. Between around 1910 and the start of the Second World War the painting and drawing of the figure was seen to be in danger of becoming sidelined. However, even though artists like Picasso and Matisse held on to it, the ways in which the human form could be depicted changed dramatically. Since WWII it was still under threat, but some exceptional individuals kept the drawing, painting and sculpture of the human form alive. Artists looked at include Egon Schiele, Laura Knight, Alberto Giacometti, Otto Dix, Lucian Freud, Alice Neel and David Hockney.
