Course synopsis
This course looks at the history of portraiture, from the early Renaissance up to late 20th century, with a selection of 100 portraits covering all manner of styles, periods and movements. As well as taking a close look at the hundred chosen, we will also discuss other work of the same period, and the context in which the work was made.
Among the artists included are Durer, Gentileschi, Caravaggio Gainsborough, Courbet, van Gogh, Kahlo, and Sherman. The sessions are informal and open to all with no previous knowledge necessary.
