Course synopsis
Most of us have heard of sonnets or limericks and we know an epitaph when we see one. Are we equally conversant with elegies, ballads, odes, haikus, acrostics or even villanelles (which are nothing to do with murderous young ladies in TV thrillers)? The course title this year is taken from a line in one of Wordsworth’s Lyrical Ballad which was a warning against our “meddling intellect. . . murder[ing] to dissect”. We will try hard not to do this and maybe discover that there is fun to be had from knowing a little more about poetic forms and how they work with examples.
As always we welcome friends old and new to the group.
Course starts on 21 September 2023
