Course synopsis
This was a golden age for the novel form, with writers such as the Brontes, Charles Dickens and George Eliot, as well as many others, some now largely forgotten. Later, the Victorian Age (1837-1901) also proved fertile ground as a setting for historical novels.Borrowing from Charles Dickens, one could say, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.”
