Course synopsis
This twelve week online course will take you on a fascinating virtual tour of the huge range of historic fortresses and castles in Ireland. From the fortified enclosures of protohistory to the castles of the Normans, to the defences against French invasion in the Revolutionary era, Ireland has had a consistent history of building for strategic purposes. You will learn how each type of structure was created, its history, and who used it - or possibly, who attacked it!
You will end the course with an understanding of their role in the built environment of Ireland, their relationship to the landscape, and (if you are planning a trip) which sites are the most interesting to visit.
This course begins in the Summer term 2024 and will be delivered via Zoom. Your tutor, Gill Rossini, is a highly experienced and published historian with expertise in the history of the so-called 'Celtic Nations'. For more information, please email her: gillrossini@outlook.com.
