From Bandits To Mafia: Britain, America And The History Of Organized Crime

All CategoriesArchaeology, History & History of Art

Course synopsis

Continuing the Crime and Society series, this third course looks at the evolution of what we now refer to as organised crime in two disparate societies: Britain, and the United States. The societal origins of gangs and group violence will be examined, along with the responses of the law enforcement agencies and the journalistic media  in both nations. The influence of deprivation, prohibition, teamsters, immigration, unemployment and other major phenomena of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries will be examined, to assess their influence over the growth of the gang.

This course will run in the Summer term, 2024.
