Course synopsis

This 12-week course will look at a period in Modern art which shifted the focus from Paris, which had been at the centre of many of the movements in modern art, to New York, and to America in general from mid to late 20th century. Starting with Abstract Expressionism, followed by the advent of Pop Art, as well as lesser known developments in painting and sculpture.

We also look at the growing presence of female and black artists, and the trend towards photography, film and performance as a means of making art.

Artists looked at include Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
