Course synopsis
Behind many of the stories that appear daily in our newspapers, often with eye catching headlines, there lie more nuanced ethical and moral concerns and dilemmas that have troubled philosophers and thinkers ever since the days of Plato and Aristotle: should we apologise for mistakes made by our ancestors, how should we behave in times of war, does society have a duty towards its most disadvantaged citizens, what is truth and does it matter, is privacy important? The list goes on.
No prior knowledge of philosophy or ethics is necessary as the leader, Judy Bavin, will introduce each week’s topic and present some main themes and discussion points. After that, it’s up to the group to take the conversation forward. Anyone can suggest topics for the group to discuss but the idea is that these should have an ethical component and be based around some of the stories currently making headline news.
