Ancient Egypt The Amarna Age

All CategoriesArchaeology, History & History of ArtCourse

Course synopsis

Egypt in the 14th century BC was at the height of its power and wealth under the “Sun King” Amenhotep III. But his son, who took the name Akhenaten, attempted a religious revolution of a kind unprecedented in Egyptian history. He did this alongside his famous wife Nefertiti. He moved away from Thebes and created a new capital at Amarna in Middle Egypt. But on his death his son Tutankhamun restored the old order and the whole Amarna period was blotted out of the collective memory.

This course will examine the turbulent time and the fascinating personalities who appear in the surviving archaeology as well as the art and literature of the period.
