After Rome Europe From 400 800

All CategoriesArchaeology, History & History of ArtCourse

Course synopsis

In the 4th and in the 5th
centuries Rome faced an unprecedented threat from various so called barbarian
peoples. It had faced threats before and survived; but this time, at least in
the west, the Roman imperial system would collapse. This course tells the story
of that implosion in the last 100 years leading up to the fall of the Western
Empire in 476. But life goes on, and in its place there arose new kingdoms led
by groups such as the Visigoths, Ostrogoths, Vandals, Franks and Lombards.
Meanwhile in Constantinople in the east the old system survived in the form of
the Byzantine Empire. This course sheds some light on what used to be called
“the Dark Ages” as the shape and culture of Europe began to be transformed
