Course synopsis
Brief description of the course
Scotland must be one of the most iconic and frequently visited nations of Europe, but anyone interested in its history often has to work hard to look behind the 'tartan, kilts and shortbread' tourist image to find the real history of this turbulent and fiercely independent country. This course will take a roller-coaster tour of that history, starting with proto-history and finishing in the early twentieth century. Particular attention will be given to her relationship with her immediate neighbours - England, Wales and Ireland - but also Scandinavia and France, and their roles as both ally and aggressor in Scotland; the Gaelic language, early Scottish populations and their culture and their influence will also feature. Anyone with an interest in Scotland history, perhaps as a family historian, will find this course both fascinating and instructive.
