A History Of Brittany: Online Course

All CategoriesDistance Learning

Course synopsis

The peninsula of Brittany, now part of north west France, has a dramatic and sometimes turbulent history, and one that has many connections with the history of Britain too. As one of the so-called 'Celtic nations', its role in the 6th century Brythonic community was significant, but Brittany has a history that reaches as far back as the Lower Palaeolithic era. Romans, Kings, settlers from Cornwall and Wales, the French Ancient Regime, and the region's role in the wars of the twentieth century will all be examined. We will also look at Brittany's own traditional language, its culture and architecture, and how the regions' inhabitants have used and been influenced by its dramatic landscape over the centuries.
