French Film Club 2023 24

French tutor Bénédicte will provide background information and the cultural setting for a series of varied French films (with French subtitles). This will be an opportunity for people studying French to listen to spoken French and discuss the film with fellow students.

The first meeting is on Wednesday 4 October 2023 Films will be listed in our newsletter, on our social media and on the notice boards at the Guild.

4 Oct - Haute Couture

A comedy drama, in which a Dior seamstress leaves her job, loses her handbag, and takes the young thief under her wing

1 Nov - En Corps (Rise)

Director Cédric Klapisch (Comedy/Drama)

Elise, a very promising classical dancer, is injured during a performance at 26 years old. Although she's told she will no longer be able to dance, she will try to find a new direction in contemporary dance.

6 Dec - Mon Crime directed by Francois Ozon    

Madeleine Verdier, a young actress, is accused of murdering a famous producer; after being acquitted, she begins her new life of fame and success, until the truth comes out

7 Feb - Les Eblouis (The Dazzled) Director Sarah Suco 2019

12 year old Camille, with a passion for circus arts, sees her life turned upside down when her parents join a charismatic church.  Gradually the indoctrination becomes sectarian.  The young girl sees a new life imposed, isolating her off from the outside.

6 March

1 May (1.00-3.30pm): Une Belle Course

Taxi driver Charles (Dany Boon) is having a bad day when 92-year-old Madeleine (Line Renaud) forces him across Paris to pick her up and then drive her back across the city to her destination – a retirement home. 

Distracted, he doesn’t pay her much attention, but her quiet charm soon begins to work its magic. Detour after detour reveals more from her life, from the thunderbolt of first love with an American GI during the war and the birth, after his departure, of their child, to some rather more painful events.
