Viva Verdi

All Events

Giuseppe Verdi composed many of his greatest operas against a backdrop of political turmoil in Italy. The emotional Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves in Nabucco was one of several pieces used by the leaders of the Risorgimento to help inspire the emerging nation. Viva Verdi became a clever rallying cry – spelling out, as it did, the name of the nationalists’ leader, Vittorio Emanuele Re D’Italia. But how much of a rebel was Verdi? In this day school we’ll explore the link between Verdi’s glorious music and the Reunification of Italy.
