Course synopsis
The Middle Ages were above all a religious age.
Between the years 1000-1500 significant changes took place in the beliefs and
organisation of religious life. This course examines the official doctrine of
the Church and the lives of popes, bishops, monks and friars. But it also explores
aspects of popular religion at the grass roots. In particular the beliefs and
ceremonies of birth, marriage and death will be probed to discover what life
was really like during this period
